Scotland Golf Clubs
The home of golf is in St Andrews, and traces of the game date back to the 15th century. In 1457, golf was banned by Parliament as it was considered a distraction for military training. The ban was repealed in 1502, and it was in the same year that King James IV first purchased golf clubs. Golf in Scotland is breathtaking, with many championship courses to play, a must-see for any golfer.
Highlands and Aberdeenshire
Royal Dornoch
Golf was first played at Dornoch in 1616. The club was founded in 1877, initially as a nine-hole course, until Old Tom Morris expanded it in 1886. The white sandy beach separates the courses from the Dornoch Firth. The course may seem rather isolated, but it is beautiful at the same time, with its elevated greens and flowering gorse, and is a true test of accuracy.
Nairn Golf Club
A hidden gem for golfers to enjoy. Originally built in 1887, Old Tom Morris extended the course and James Braid made further alterations, making it a masterpiece. Nairn offers sea views from every hole, with the sea in play on 6 of the first 7 holes. This is a pure championship course, with challenging holes and a good mix of long and short par 4s. One of the fishing houses between the 9th and 10th holes, which was used to store salmon, has recently been converted into a halfway house.
Cabot Highlands
Home to Castle Stuart Golf Links, Cabot Highlands is an exceptional golf destination. Designed by Gil Hanse, it features wonderful green complexes with run-off areas. The angles and placements on the green provide a great challenge. With the scheduled opening of ‘Old Petty’ in 2025, another 18-hole championship golf course, it will be a true golfing mecca.
Royal Aberdeen
Founded in 1780, Royal Aberdeen is the sixth oldest golf club in the world. The course was moved to the Balgownie lands north of the River Don and opened for play in 1888. Designed by Robert Simpson, then remodelled and extended by James Braid, it is a traditional out-and-back course. The course borders the North Sea and is considered by many to have the best front nine in golf.
Trump Aberdeen
Trump International Links was inaugurated in 2012 and designed by Martin Hawtree. Running alongside the beach, the course is a stunning use of natural terrain. With fairways winding through the dunes and greens hidden in their depths, the course is magnificent. Another 18-hole course designed by Martin Hawtree is due to open in 2025, making it a destination well worth visiting.
Cruden Bay
Golf has been in existence in this location since 1791. The Championship Links course was designed by Old Tom Morris and Archie Simpson in 1899. The designers used the original lie of land with Raised tees and greens blended into the sand dunes the course is mesmerising. With fairways hidden from one and other by the dunes and greens protected by sharp run offs this is a very good links. Sent from my iPhone

St Andrews Old Course
St Andrews Links is known as the home of golf and the game has been played here for over 600 years. The club was founded in 1754 and has hosted 29 Open Championships, more than any other club. Allan Robertson was the course architect and in 1858 he was the first person to break 80 by shooting a 79. There are 7 double greens at St Andrews that share 2 holes, which is interesting as they all total 18 holes. There are 7 courses at St Andrews, making it a must-visit golf destination.
Carnoustie
Carnoustie has hosted the Open Championship 7 times and is known as the most challenging of the Open Courses. Its history dates back to 1527 and Allan Robertson laid out a 10-hole course in 1842. Old Tom Morris upgraded the course to 18 holes in 1857 and James Braid extended it in 1926. The final holes at Carnoustie are tough – the Barry Burn takes many victims. Jean Van de Velde found this out in 1999 when he made a triple bogey at 7 and lost the play-off to Paul Lawrie.
Kingsbarnes Golf Links
Kingsbarnes has some magnificent holes along the coastline overlooking the North Sea. Golf has been played at Kingsbarnes since 1793 and the course is steeped in history. Kyle Phillips designed the course as it is today, which opened in July 2000. The course is so beautiful and natural that you’d think it had been there since the early 1900s.
Muirfield Golf Club
Home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. The first competition was held on the Links of Leith in 1744, when the first rules of golf were written. Muirfield Golf Club was founded in 1891 – another amazing design by Old Tom Morris. In 1923, Harry Colt redesigned the course, introducing 14 new holes. The club has hosted 16 Open Championships, 11 Amateur Championships, the 1973 Ryder Cup, the 1959 and 1979 Walker Cup and the 1952 and 1984 Curtis Cup. Interestingly, the only remaining hole from the 1891 design is the 2nd hole, which was originally the 3rd one. The course is maintained to perfection.
North Berwick
North Berwick opened in 1832 and golf has been played on the West Links since the 17th century. David Strath’s West Links, with almost 6,500 par 71s, is a real challenge. Situated on the Firth of Forth, it offers idyllic views of the sea and Bass Rock, which is a sanctuary for shorebirds. The game here is fast and fun and you can expect to play in just over 3 hours. The course features stone walls, the Eil Burn and deep bunkers to negotiate.
Dunbar Golf Club
Golf at Dunbar is steeped in history, having been played here for over 400 years. The club was founded in 1856 and designed by Open champion Old Tom Morris. The course runs along the coast on a narrow strip of land. With uninterrupted views of the North Sea and Bass Rock, it is a superb course. At 6,500 yards, the course requires shot-making and accuracy, with the coastal winds making every shot a challenge.
Crail
The Crail Golfing Society was founded in 1786 by eleven gentlemen at the Crail Golf Inn. Located on the Fife coast at the eastern end are two fantastic golf courses. Balcomie Links, designed by Old Tom Morris in 1895, is not a long course (6,000 yards) but with a par of 69 and North Sea winds it is a great challenge. The other course, Craighead Links, designed by Gil Hanse, was opened in 1999. With a par 72 of over 6,700 yards, the course has interesting slopes on the greens. The last 9 holes are tighter and better defined, making it a real championship course.
Gullane Golf Club
Golf has been played at Gullane Links for over 370 years. The club was founded in 1882 and had 32 members in its first year. There are three courses at Gullane: the first was built in 1884 and offers 360-degree views from the 7th tee; the second was built in 1898 by Willie Park Jr., who also built the third in 1910. The emphasis is on shot-making, with an incredibly compact turf that allows the ball to be skimmed with great ease. Having hosted two Scottish Opens, this club is simply not to be missed.
Dumbarnie Links
A new course that opened in 2020, the design of which was handled by Clive Clark. The course is breathtaking with wave-like sand dunes and a mix of lined and deep bunkers, making it a tough challenge. At nearly 7,000 yards, it is long, with an out-and-back layout with changes of direction, and a number of holes on the two 9s that run along the beach. It is a truly magnificent setting.

Trump Turnberry
Turnberry Golf Club was created in 1902. It is now a 36-hole championship course. The Ailsa course is situated on a steep promontory with superb picturesque views along the Scottish coast. In 2017, the course at Kintyre was renamed ‘King Robert the Bruce’. With a complete overhaul, the course is now a real compliment to sit with the Ailsa. Having a mid-course hut in the lighthouse is simply a magical touch.
Glasgow Gail’s
Glasgow Gail’s Golf Club , one of the oldest golf clubs in the world, was founded in 1787. The course changed location and opened on the Gail site in 1892. Willie Fernie, winner of the Open Championship in 1883 and a professional at Troon, was commissioned to redesign the course. The tight fairways bordered by gorse and heather make this a course not to be missed.
Machrihanish Golf Club
The course is located on the western side of the secluded Kintyre peninsula. It is set in natural dunes overlooking Machrihanish Bay. The course was opened in 1876 and originally consisted of 10 holes. Charles Hunter ( Prestwick’s professional ) extended it to 12 holes and in 1879 Old Tom Morris extended it to 18 holes. The first, called ‘Battery’, is one of the best opening holes in golf, a 423-yard par 4 with an elevated tee on the shore.
Prestwick
Opened in 1851, the 12-hole course was designed by Old Tom Morris and extended to 18 holes in 1883. Prestwick has hosted the Open Championship no fewer than 24 times, the first being in 1860. The winning prize was an old Moroccan belt. The holes wind between rugged dunes and undulating fairways. The greens are firm and fast, some hidden in hollows while others are raised on plateaux. A legendary golf course steeped in history.
Royal Troon
Royal Troon has hosted the Open Championship eleven times and the Amateur Championship six times. It has the shortest hole of any Open venue: the 126-yard eighth hole – known as ‘the Postage Stamp’ because of its tiny green, originally named by Willie Park Jr. A traditional links course, with tight fairways and an array of gorse and heather that are never far away.
